My Child is Going to College Out of State. Where Do We Register the Car?

Sending a car to college out of state? I explain why you might be able to keep your Florida registration and insurance while your student is away.

When kids head off to college out of state, parents often panic about vehicle registration. Do you have to switch everything to the new state?

Generally, no. If your child is a student, they are often still regarded as a resident of your home in Florida, even if they are living in a dorm or apartment for the semester .

Many of our clients choose to keep the car registered and insured here in Florida while listing the student’s address at school. However, if the move is permanent—if they are not coming back—then they should register the car in that new state.

If you are unsure, just call us. We can look at the specific situation and make sure you aren’t accidentally creating a coverage gap by leaving the car registered in the wrong jurisdiction.
