What Are “Living Benefits” in Life Insurance? (And Do You Need Them?)

Life insurance isn’t just for death. I explain “Living Benefits” like the Waiver of Premium and why you might (or might not) want to add them to your policy.

We usually think of life insurance as something that only pays out when we die. But there are features called “living benefits” or riders that can help you while you are still alive. A common one is the “Waiver of Premium.” .

If you get disabled or sick and cannot work, this rider ensures you don’t have to keep paying your premiums to keep the policy active. It essentially “frontloads” the protection so that your coverage doesn’t lapse just because you lost your income due to health issues .

However, I find that nine out of ten clients don’t choose these options.

Why?

Because they are premium conscious. They want the maximum death benefit for the lowest possible price, so they strip away the extras. But if you are worried about long-term health issues, these living benefits can be a valuable safety net worth asking about.
