What Insurance Does a Food Truck Need Compared to a Restaurant?

I break down the specific insurance requirements for food trucks, from Commercial Auto to the mandatory Alcohol Liability needed to get your license.

Food trucks are a fantastic business model, but from an insurance perspective, they have unique needs. Like any small business, a food truck needs two core things: property insurance and liability insurance. However, because the “property” is a vehicle that moves, standard property insurance isn’t enough.

You need Commercial Auto insurance to cover the truck itself.

Once the truck is parked and serving customers, you need General Liability. This covers you if a customer trips on a cord, slips near your truck, or gets injured while buying food.

This is non-negotiable for operating safely in Florida.

There is another layer that many owners forget: Alcohol Liability. If you are selling beer or wine from your truck, you absolutely must have alcohol liability insurance. In fact, you cannot even get your alcohol license to operate without showing proof of this specific coverage.

Finally, do not forget your staff. If you have workers cooking or serving in the truck, you need Workers’ Compensation coverage.

Whether you are a brick-and-mortar restaurant or on four wheels, making sure you are covered for property, liability, and your employees is the only way to protect the business you have built.
